Shoulda Started

FAAB return

FAAB return compares the waiver dollars you spent with the points those pickups scored in the lineups you started. It is shown on the season report and under a manager's weekly receipt, only for leagues that use a FAAB budget.

What is counted

  • Every waiver claim that went through and cost money. Failed claims cost nothing and are ignored. Free-agent adds and trades are not waiver pickups.
  • Spent is the sum of those winning bids. Left is the budget minus spent. If FAAB dollars were traded, the budget includes them, so it can be above or below the league's starting amount.
  • Points are what that player scored in your starting lineup. Bench points do not count, because a player you never start gave you nothing.
  • Points per $ is points divided by spent.
  • Best buy is the paid pickup with the most points. Worst buy is the one furthest below what its price would have bought at the league's average rate, and only appears when it really fell short.

Which weeks count

Sleeper files a claim under the week it was processed. Claims run after that week's games, so most pickups first play the next week, but a few start in the same week. A week counts when the player started for you, from the claim week on, until you dropped or traded him. If you drop a player and claim him again later, each claim only gets its own stretch of weeks. Points scored under an earlier stretch, such as a free-agent add or a trade, are never credited to a claim. The season report counts every scored week, playoffs included; the receipt counts the season up to the week you are looking at.

$0 claims

A claim that cost nothing is free, so it would make every ratio look better. Those claims are kept out of spent, points and points per dollar.

What it cannot know

  • It uses hindsight. Nobody knows on waiver day who will score. A cheap miss is often a good bet.
  • It does not know what you would have started instead. A pickup who scored 10 points replaced someone who scored something too; this is points produced, not points added.
  • It does not value depth, bye-week cover, injury insurance, or blocking a rival from a player. Those are real reasons to spend and none of them show up as points.
  • The numbers come from Sleeper's own transaction log. If Sleeper is slow or fails to answer, the FAAB section is simply left out instead of showing a partial total.
  • Best ball and leagues without FAAB show no FAAB return.
